From 29 May to 26 June 2009, the International Whaling Commission will hold its 61st annual meeting in the city of Funchal, drawing attention to the Region of Madeira and highlighting its environmental and touristic attributes.
This event is divided into phases: from 29 May to 12 June the Scientific Committee will meet, with the participation of around 200 scientists, followed by the Forums in the intermediary phase then the Plenary from 21 to 26 June, which will have more than 500 participants from over the world. The session will discuss important and pertinent questions about the conservation and monitoring of the global cetacean population, as well as the existence of internationally recognised fishing quotas and other matters.
