On 4 July, Madeira will be part of the 25th Blue Marlin World Cup, taking place between 8.30 am and 4.30 pm in various places around the world.
Lovers of sport fishing will aim to catch the largest Blue Marlin, which must weight at least 500 pounds, or approximately 227 kg, tag it and then release it.
The Maritime Area of Madeira shelters a large biodiversity of marine life, and is one of the best areas for big game fishing. In previous years (1995 to 1997), the first prize was caught in the seas of the Archipelago. Last year the winner was greatly disputed between Madeira, Bermuda and Hawaii, with the latter finally being awarded the prize. For more information visit: www.bluemarlinworldcup.com
